Analysis

What to know about Romeoville's water

Romeoville ranks #350 out of 891 cities in Illinois for water quality, placing it mid-range in the state.

Romeoville relies on groundwater, which is generally less vulnerable to surface contamination but can be affected by naturally occurring minerals like arsenic and nitrate, as well as agricultural and industrial runoff.

PFAS compounds were detected in testing, though levels remain within current EPA limits. Residents seeking extra precaution may consider an activated carbon or reverse osmosis filter.

Hexavalent chromium (chromium-6) was detected at 0.20 µg/L in UCMR 3 testing. While below California's 10 µg/L limit and with no federal MCL set, residents sensitive to this contaminant may consider reverse osmosis filtration.

While lead levels are within EPA limits, they are above the recommended 5 ppb threshold that health organizations consider ideal. A point-of-use filter adds an extra layer of protection.

Key contaminant findings

Based on the most recent EPA sampling data for Romeoville's water supply.

Lead Elevated
Detected: 8.2 ppb Limit: 15 ppb (EPA Action Level)

Within EPA limits but above the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended level of 1 ppb. An NSF 53-certified filter provides additional protection.

PFAS (4 compounds) Elevated
Detected: Highest: lithium at 54.6000 µg/L Limit: 0.004 µg/L (EPA MCL)

Detected but within current EPA limits. PFAS do not break down in the environment and can accumulate in the body over time. An activated carbon filter can reduce exposure.

PFAS "forever chemicals" detected

UCMR 5 testing found 4 PFAS compounds in Romeoville's water supply. PFAS are synthetic chemicals that persist indefinitely in the environment and the human body.

Where Romeoville's water comes from

Groundwater

Romeoville's drinking water is drawn from underground aquifers through wells.

Groundwater is naturally filtered through rock and soil layers, generally requiring less treatment than surface water. However, it can contain naturally occurring contaminants like arsenic, radon, and minerals.

Agricultural activity, septic systems, and industrial operations near well fields can introduce nitrates, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds.

The system is operated by local government ownership and serves approximately 50,458 people through 1 water system.

Frequently asked questions

Is Romeoville, IL tap water safe to drink?

Romeoville's water quality earned a grade of A- (85.8/100). The water generally meets EPA standards and is considered safe for consumption. The city ranks #350 out of 891 cities tested in Illinois.

What contaminants are in Romeoville's water?

Lead was measured at 8.2 ppb (90th percentile). 4 PFAS compounds were detected. 56 violations are on record.

How is Romeoville's water quality grade calculated?

The grade is based on four factors: violation history (40%), lead and copper levels (25%), PFAS contamination (25%), and regulatory compliance (10%). The score is also adjusted based on how complete the available data is. See our methodology page for full details.

Do I need a water filter in Romeoville?

While lead levels are within EPA limits, a filter adds extra protection. PFAS compounds have been detected. A filter with activated carbon can help reduce exposure.

Where does Romeoville's water come from?

Romeoville's water is sourced from Groundwater. The city has 1 water system serving approximately 50,458 residents.

What health violations has Romeoville's water system had?

Romeoville has 17 health-based violations on record. The most recent violation was recorded in January 2014. Health-based violations mean the water exceeded EPA maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for a regulated substance. 2 violations remain unresolved.

Is Romeoville's groundwater at risk of contamination?

Romeoville uses groundwater, which can be affected by naturally occurring contaminants like arsenic, radon, and nitrate, as well as agricultural runoff and industrial activity. The system has 56 violations on record that may relate to groundwater quality. Groundwater systems are generally less susceptible to surface contamination but should be monitored for emerging contaminants like PFAS.

Why does Romeoville have so many PFAS compounds in its water?

4 different PFAS "forever chemical" compounds were detected in Romeoville's water supply during UCMR 5 testing. PFAS contamination often originates from proximity to military installations (AFFF firefighting foam), airports, industrial manufacturing sites, or wastewater treatment facilities. While detected, current levels are within EPA limits. An activated carbon filter can further reduce exposure.

How does Romeoville's water compare to other cities?

Romeoville ranks #350 out of 891 cities in Illinois (better than 61% of state cities) and #5063 out of 15744 cities nationally (68th percentile). The grade of A- reflects the combined assessment of violation history, lead and copper levels, PFAS contamination, and regulatory compliance.
