The final weekend of July 2026 produced a dense cluster of boil-water advisories, headlined by the entire West Bank of New Orleans — a precautionary notice covering all of Algiers and the surrounding west-bank service area after pressure at the Algiers Water Plant fell below the regulatory floor. Within the same 36 hours, two Chicago-area villages went under boil orders, a Virginia town lost pressure to a main-line break, and four Effingham County, Georgia neighborhoods were placed under a 24-hour advisory. None involved confirmed contamination. Every one was triggered by low pressure — the same mechanism behind the advisories we tracked the week before, and a reminder of how thin the operating margin is on American distribution systems in late summer.
New Orleans West Bank — Pressure Below 20 psi at the Algiers Plant
The largest advisory of the weekend hit New Orleans’ entire West Bank on Saturday, July 25.
The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) reported that crews working on a water tower at the Algiers Water Plant caused system pressure in the area to drop below 20 pounds per square inch (psi). That number is not arbitrary — it is the threshold at which a utility can no longer certify that the distribution system is protected against intrusion, and it triggers a precautionary advisory automatically under state health rules.
Notably, there was no water main break. The pressure loss came from planned work on the tower itself. SWBNO restored normal pressure the same day but kept the advisory in force while it collected and cleared test samples — the standard 24-plus-hour bacteriological confirmation cycle. Residents were told to use boiled or bottled water for drinking, cooking, and preparing infant formula until the all-clear.
That last instruction is the one that matters most and is most often mishandled. Worth, Illinois — A Water Tower Supply Line, and a Village Without Water
The Village of Worth, southwest of Chicago, had a harder night. The main supply line to the village water tower broke around 1:00 a.m. Saturday, July 25, interrupting water service village-wide. The boil order followed at 7:30 a.m.
Village officials advised residents to boil all water for a minimum of five minutes before consuming — a longer instruction than the one-minute standard most utilities use, and a conservative call. Public Works crews repaired the line and restored pressure during the day, but the village could not lift the order on its own timeline: Illinois EPA requires notification through state emergency channels plus completed sampling and clearance before an advisory ends. As of Sunday the village had not announced a lift date.
A tower supply-line break is a more consequential failure than a distribution main break. The elevated tank is what holds system pressure steady; lose the line feeding it and pressure collapses across the whole service area at once rather than in a localized zone. That is why Worth’s order was village-wide from the start.
Bridgeview, Illinois — Broken Thursday, Lifted Saturday
Roughly four miles away, the Village of Bridgeview worked through the same sequence on a slightly earlier clock. A main broke near 71st Street and Beloit Avenue on the village’s north side on Thursday, dropping pressure on the south end of town and triggering a boil order for the affected area.
Bridgeview lifted its order Saturday morning after clearance sampling came back clean — a textbook two-day cycle, and a useful illustration of the geography of these events. The break was on the north side; the boil order applied to the south. Pressure loss propagates through a network in ways that do not track the location of the failure, which is why a utility’s advisory boundary often looks arbitrary to residents standing next to the repair crew.
Chilhowie, Virginia — Sulphur Springs Main Line
The Town of Chilhowie, in Smyth County in southwest Virginia, issued a boil-water advisory on July 25 after a main line break in the Sulphur Springs area caused pressure loss across portions of West Chilhowie — including Vance Drive, Crestwood, Echo Lane, and surrounding streets.
The town instructed affected residents to boil tap water for one minute before any use, with the advisory in force until further notice. Chilhowie is a small system serving roughly 1,800 people, and small systems face a particular version of this problem: the same clearance-sampling requirements as a large utility, with a fraction of the staff and often a single certified operator to run the process.
Effingham County, Georgia — Four Neighborhoods, 24 Hours
Effingham County leadership issued a 24-hour boil-water advisory beginning at 9:00 p.m. Saturday, July 25, covering four subdivisions: Belmont Glen, Cedar Ridge, New Haven, and Staffordshire.
The county was explicit that the notice was precautionary and that no contamination had been confirmed — issued because low pressure in a water line can allow bacteria to enter the pipes. It is a clean example of a utility explaining the actual mechanism to residents rather than issuing a bare instruction, which measurably improves compliance.
Scranton, Pennsylvania — 620 Customers
Slightly earlier in the month but not previously covered here: Pennsylvania American Water issued a boil-water advisory on July 19 for parts of Scranton after a main break near North Washington Avenue and Mulberry Street. Approximately 620 customers were affected.
The Mechanism: Why Low Pressure Means Boil
Six advisories, one cause. It is worth being precise about why pressure loss — not contamination — is what puts a city on notice.
A pressurized distribution system defends itself by pushing outward. Every pipe has defects: hairline cracks, deteriorated joints, corroded service connections. As long as internal pressure exceeds external pressure, water leaks out and nothing gets in. When pressure drops below roughly 20 psi, that defense inverts. Groundwater, soil moisture, and whatever is dissolved in them can be drawn inward through the same defects — a phenomenon called intrusion or backsiphonage.
The utility cannot know whether intrusion occurred. It can only know that the conditions permitting it existed. So it issues a precautionary advisory and runs bacteriological samples, typically testing for coliform bacteria as an indicator organism and often E. coli as a confirmation of fecal contamination. Two consecutive clean sample sets, usually 24 hours apart, clear the system.
Boiling works because it addresses exactly the risk in question. A rolling boil for one minute inactivates bacteria, viruses, and protozoan cysts including Cryptosporidium and Giardia. It does not remove lead, nitrate, PFAS, or any other chemical contaminant — boiling concentrates those by evaporating water. That distinction matters if you are in an advisory area and also on an old lead service line.

What Residents Should Do During an Advisory
- Boil for the time your utility specifies, not the time you remember from last year. Worth said five minutes; Chilhowie said one. Follow the local instruction.

- Flush your lines after the advisory lifts. Run cold taps several minutes, discard ice made during the advisory, and replace filter cartridges that were in use.
