Analysis

What to know about West Reading's water

West Reading ranks #71 out of 560 cities in Pennsylvania for water quality, placing it above average in the state.

The city draws from surface water sources, which are more susceptible to seasonal runoff and agricultural contamination, requiring extensive multi-barrier treatment including coagulation, filtration, and disinfection.

Of particular concern: PFAS "forever chemical" levels exceed the 2024 EPA maximum contaminant levels. These synthetic compounds don't break down naturally and require specialized filtration such as reverse osmosis or granular activated carbon.

What contaminants are in West Reading's water?

Lead was measured at 0.0 ppb (90th percentile). 4 PFAS compounds were detected. 14 violations are on record.

How is West Reading's water quality grade calculated?

The grade is based on four factors: violation history (40%), lead and copper levels (25%), PFAS contamination (25%), and regulatory compliance (10%). The score is also adjusted based on how complete the available data is. See our methodology page for full details.

Do I need a water filter in West Reading?

PFAS compounds exceed EPA limits — a reverse osmosis or activated carbon filter is recommended.

Where does West Reading's water come from?

West Reading's water is sourced from Purchased surface water. The city has 1 water system serving approximately 4,300 residents.

What health violations has West Reading's water system had?

West Reading has 1 health-based violation on record. The most recent violation was recorded in March 2022. Health-based violations mean the water exceeded EPA maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for a regulated substance. 5 violations remain unresolved.

Why does West Reading have so many PFAS compounds in its water?

4 different PFAS "forever chemical" compounds were detected in West Reading's water supply during UCMR 5 testing. PFAS contamination often originates from proximity to military installations (AFFF firefighting foam), airports, industrial manufacturing sites, or wastewater treatment facilities. Some levels exceed the 2024 EPA maximum contaminant levels — a reverse osmosis or NSF-certified activated carbon filter is strongly recommended.
